Program

March 1519, 2021

The Encontro de Coleoptera was planned, organized, and executed independently by volunteers from Brazil and was sponsored by The Coleopterists Society.

This international event had 643 registered attendees and 68 speakers addressing 20 families of beetles with a geographic focus primarily in the New World.

In addition to a diverse program of compact (up to 5 minutes) and traditional (up to 15 minutes) presentations, this meeting featured longer talks and presentations that addressed topics of general interest to the coleopterological community, such as a discussion about the challenges of studying the New World beetle fauna, the perspectives of studies of immature stages of Coleoptera in Brazil and the practice of zoological nomenclature. A tribute was paid to the memory of Professor Sergio Antonio Vanin (Universidade de São Paulo) and to several prominent Brazilian Coleopterists. There was also a virtual appearance of Professor Miguel A. Monné (Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro).

Amongst many other topics, presentations included morphological studies, biogeography, comparative phylogenetics methods, the importance and use of scientific collections, taxonomic revisions, faunal surveys and ecological studies, use of scanning electron microscopy and macrophotography methods and evolutionary and phylogenetic studies.
